Graffiti: Style As Defiance

After TAKI 183 got his name in the New York Times in 1971, graffiti took off. "Every new school year was a new graffiti season" says IZ THE WIZ.

To Hugo Martinez, the sociology student and youth gang advocate who in 1972 organized the first graffiti association, United Graffiti Artists, "Graffiti writing is a way of gaining status in a society where to own property is to have identity." Your name was your currency, and you created value by making your mark in the niches or getting into mass production. Here was the logic of reverse colonization, a virus spread by the faceless fellow travelers of roaches and rats. "You started on your street, then you went to the buses. You take over your neighborhood, then you take over your home line, then you take over your division, then you take over all city," says Luke "SPARE ONE" Felisberto.

You wanted fame. To an invisible generation, fame itself was wealth, liability transformed into asset. Maybe you hung yourself off the side of a building or climbed the steel beams supporting an elevating subway station to rock a tag that would make cleaning men scream in frustration and the other writers shake in jealousy. Or you were outrageous enough to hit the biggest, riskiest target you could find, as the pioneering female writer STONEY did in 1972 when she tagged the Statue Of Liberty. You tagged everywhere you went. Inside the cars, you and other writers staked space as if it were a turf to claim with your names. Train riders would treat your tags as invasions of their daily anonymity.

Still only a few tags, like those of the spliff-star saint STAY HIGH 149, could really register much louder than the dull ad placards. The "pieces", on the other hand, were personal pageants of light, line, and color, rolling billboards for the self. And when writers added style to these, it was like they had begun printing million-dollar bills. Soon, hundreds of kids were scaling barbed wire fences, leaping instant death on electrified third rails, and running from police just to piece cars in the train yards and layups in ever bolder detail and wilder style.

Quelques années plus tôt, Kurtis Blow, un rappeur de Brooklyn qui avait fait un tube, The Breaks, m'a invité à jouer sur un de ses disques. C'est lui qui m'a familiarisé avec eux: Ice-T, Public Ennemy, NWA, Run-DMC. C'est mecs-là ne sont pas là à raconter des craques. Ils tapent dur sur leurs caisses, ils repoussent les limites, ça n'est pas demain qu'ils vont se calmer. Tous sont poètes et ils savent lire dans le vent. Un jour ou l'autre, il y en a un qui va foncer, un qui connaît ce monde-là, qui aura vraiment grandi dedans... celui-là le portera et l'emmenera plus loin. Il aura la tête nette, coupe à l'horizontale, et du pouvoir dans la communauté. Il trouvera d'un seul pied la corde tendue vers l'univers, et on saura que c'est lui - parce qu'il n'y en aura qu'un. Le public le suivra, et ce n'est pas moi qui lui reprocherai quoi que ce soit. La musique que nous faisons, Danny et moi, est dépassée. [...] A peine étions-nous à Paris depuis trois ou quatre jours que nous fûmes de nous nouveau tous arrêtés par la police. Depuis trois mois, il y avait eu une enquête, qui aboutit à l'arrestation de plus de cent cinquante personnes. Nous fûmes tous bouclés pour suspicion d'addiction à la drogue. Après cinq ou six heures d'interrogatoire, les gens se mirent à craquer. Dès que quelqu'un signait l'aveu de culpabilité, on l'emmenait dans une autre pièce et on lui donnait à s'injecter de la drogue de meilleure qualité que ce qu'on pouvait obtenir dans la rue. Le pauvre petit Dean n'avait que deux mois et il commençait vraiment à avoir faim. Après huit heures je réussis finalement à communiquer avec l'un des inspecteurs, assez pour le convaincre que je n'étais pas malade et que je ne me trouvais en France que depuis quelques jours. Quand ils me relâchèrent, plus de cent personnes, dont je connaissais un grand nombre, avaient craqué et été incarcérés.

J'obtins un engagement dans une petite cave de la rue de la Huchette, le Chat-qui-Pêche, qui appartenait à une femme agée, Mme Ricard. Elle vivait juste au-dessus. La police continua à me harceler pendant longtemps. Chaque mois, je recevais le télégramme d'un inspecteur et dans les vingt-quatre heures qui suivaient, il fallait, si je voulais continuer à rester en France, que je me présente à son bureau pour un examen. Au club, les choses marchaient bien. Carol venait chaque soir à la cave avec Dean et, chacun voulant le tenir, il passait de main en main au bar.

Durant les onze mois qui suivirent, je jouai avec de nombreux musiciens européens. Je vis également Anita O'Day et John Poole quand ils vinrent du Danemark pour acheter du haschich. Chez Ali se trouvait dans le quartier algérien, près de la Bastille. Deux ou trois jours par semaine j'y allais avec des amis boire du thé à la menthe en regardant l'un des serveurs rouler une énorme cigarette en forme de cône. Nous fumions et buvions du thé juque vers quatre heures, moment où tous les musiciens arrivaient. Ils avaient des flûtes, toutes sortes de tambours, des guitares et des mandolines. Un ou deux types chantaient vraiment bien. Stan Getz et Allen Eager passèrent par Paris et, comme d'habitude, je dus faire marcher Stan pendant quarante-cinq minutes dans le couloir du quatrième étage d'un hôtel pour l'empecher de s'écrouler: Allen se tenait d'un côté de lui, moi de l'autre. Dexter vint à Paris et y resta pour un temps lui aussi. J'envoyai une ou deux personnes en Angleterre voir Lady Frankau: elles revinrent avec de l'héroïne et de la coke.

1963 fut une excellente année. Je parvins à ne pas me droguer de façon excessive. Je restai quatre ou cinq mois sans rien prendre, à la stupéfaction de la police française, qui exigeait chaque mois un specimen d'urine. Quand ils finirent par me lâcher la grappe, je me remis à me défoncer de temps en temps, généralement quand quelqu'un que j'avais envoyé chez Lady Frankau revenait de Londres. La personne arrivait toujours avec une bonne petite dose d'héroïne et de cocaïne. parfois j'achetais ma came à l'ex-femme d'un vieil ami mais ce qu'elle vendait n'était pas de très bonne qualité - cela avait été coupé tant de fois qu'il fallait s'en injecter une demi-cuillerée pour sentir quoi que ce soit, et l'effet disparaissait en vingt minutes.

La cave de Mme Ricard était pleine à craquer tous les soirs. Des musiciens de toute l'Europe venait y jouer et manger un bol de chili maison. Un jour on m'y vola ma trompette dans la cuisine et un trompettiste fançais me prêta son bugle, un vieux Selmer français. J'en adorais le son. Il finit par me l'offrir et je le gardai cinq ans, l'utilisant sur tous les disques que j'enregistrai entre 1964 et 1965. Je l'employai même sur Colpix, qui fut déclaré meilleur album de jazz de 1964 et 1965, et sur lequel jouaient Phil Urso, Hal Glaper, Charlie Rice, Jymie Merritt, Bobby Scott et Kenny Burrell, et sur Limelight, gravé avec Baby breeze. La plupart d'entre nous, moi y compris, finirent par rentrer aux Etats-Unis. [...]
